Super Moon

A Super Moon occurs when the Moon’s orbit is closest to Earth. A Super Full Moon is when a Full Moon is closest to Earth, and a Super New Moon is when a New Moon is closest to Earth. While we can’t see a Super New Moon, a Super Full Moon appears 7 percent larger and 15 percent brighter than usual. That glowing gold orb is inspiring.

I first noticed a Super Moon earlier this year when I looked out over the South China Sea one evening. I saw another one just a day ago. The sight of that giant Moon reminded me that ordinary things can become extraordinary. It also occurred to me that something that can seem out of reach, like the moon, may not be all that far away.

That’s how I want to think about the issues I’m covering in this blog. Issues such as inequality, unemployment, and homelessness can make people feel that a peaceful, worthwhile life is out of reach. I would like to think that by focusing on these big issues, they become within our ability to solve. Just like a Super Moon appears to us a few times a year, so obviously big and bright that we can’t help noticing and wondering about it, issues appear to each of us. We just need to put our minds to tackling them, and I believe we can solve them.
